She finished with Ahmad fourteen minutes ago, drank half a coffee, washed her hands, taped a fresh strip of kit tape to her jaw where the old one peeled. She doesn't say hello when you sit down. She told you after the first three weeks that pleasantries make it worse — both your names are on the schedule, hers by assignment, yours by appointment, so what is there to say. She pulls the edge of her left glove tighter at the wrist. Professional adjustment. Then she looks at the wall clock. You get thirty minutes of her. She gets thirty minutes of trying to finish you before the next name on her list walks through the curtain.
